MAGNUS

TEN YEARS LATER

I’m heading to Celestial Falls to spend time with Marcus and his family. After an insanely busy few months, we decided to give our employees some time off while I visit Magnus and his crew in Celestial Falls.

“It’s about time,” I grumble when Marcus opens the door. His messy hair and half-buttoned shirt tell me I interrupted something. Good. Let the fucker suffer. I follow him into the hall and march over to pull my sister-in-law into a tight hug. My twin’s warning growl fills the hallway, causing me to smirk to myself. I know the sight of another man touching his mate drives his wolf insane. I can’t resist looking over Stormy’s shoulder to roll my eyes at Marcus. “You’re too easy to rile up.” I wink at my pretty sister-in-law before spinning around to hug my adorable nieces. “How are my favorite nieces doing?”

“We’re your only nieces.” Lucy laughs, and her sisters, Lacey and Jennifer, join in.

All three girls start talking over each other, and I wince as a headache starts in my temple. Nanny Eloise, Stormy’s cat godmother, comes trotting down the stairs and curls up at my feet. That’s quite a story.

Years ago, Stormy’s unsavory warlock-fae father went insane when his fae family took his power away. Eldin Loinnir attempted to replace his lost power by absorbing his daughter’s magic light. He managed to recharge enough black power to be dangerous. His wife, Millicent, and her sister, Eloise, stepped in to protect Stormy and ended up suffering for their interference. The insane bastard imprisoned Nanny Eloise’s soul in her black cat before turning the full force of his dark power onto his wife. Millie’s white energy was no match for Eldin’s black sorcery. When their combined magical force ignited, the blast shot both of them to another realm of existence, never to be heard from again. All good reasons to stay the fuck away from magic. I shudder at the reminder before giving each little girl a hug. Jealousy cuts through me when I see the red lipstick staining my brother’s lips. I ignore the fucking annoying sensation and swipe it off his smug face. “Red lipstick isn’t your color,” I grumble.

“I tell him that all the time, but he insists on wearing it,” Stormy teases and walks up to wrap her arm around Marcus’ waist. Needing to get away from all the lovey-dovey shit that makes me want to gag, I scratch the black cat on her head, then grab my bag.

“I’ll go drop this in my room.” I smile down at my nieces. “Does anyone want to help me unpack?” I wince as the three girls all shout.

A while later, I’m sitting on the back patio with my twin. “You haven’t seen any signs Lacey is about to change?” I ask and take a sip of my lukewarm beer. After the mess I made at Marcus’ wedding, I promised myself never to get that fucking smashed again. Now, I rarely drink.

“No,” he answers while we watch the girls race over to the huge oak tree in the large backyard.
